The Prickly Pear is a chef-owned cooking school in its own home venue at 1610 New York Avenue in East Austin. Chef Deb and Chef Mike run relaxed, recreational classes with themes such as New American Mediterranean, Italian and Roman nights.
Classes are communal. Everyone cooks together at one table instead of at separate stations, with a stool for each person and real knives and cutting boards. Most menus are a three-course meal of appetizer, entrée and dessert, and the night ends with a sit-down dinner. Bring your own wine or beer. The school supplies glasses, ice, openers and a chilling fridge. Leftovers go home with you.
Public classes cost around $100 plus tax a person and need eight people to run. Teens 13 and up can join with a guardian. Teams and private parties book Monday to Thursday, for up to 24 guests.
