Austin food nonprofit with six-week cooking and nutrition courses
Sustainable Food Center is an Austin nonprofit that works on food access, and cooking education is one of its four main programs. Its center has been in East Austin since 2013, and the organization has been around for nearly 50 years.
The cooking program is called The Happy Kitchen / La Cocina Alegre. It began in 1995 as free, bilingual cooking and nutrition education. The current course runs six weeks and focuses on nutritious, flavorful and culturally relevant meals. In 2024 the program reached Lubbock for the first time.
This is a community education program, not a drop-in school for date nights or one-off evenings. SFC also runs two farmers' markets, SFC Farmers' Market Downtown and SFC Farmers' Market at Sunset Valley, and a Double Up Food Bucks program that matches SNAP and WIC benefits on fresh produce.
